Form Four leavers eyeing a life in the medical profession through the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) have been offered a second chance to apply for courses from today until September 16.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has asked those who applied but missed their dream courses to use the revision window open for five days. It is free of charge.
However, some applicants have reported technical glitches, making worse the IT challenges facing Kenyans accessing public services. Among others, the application for higher education funding has been revised twice since August 1 when applicants met hurdles on the way. Indeed, the Ministry of Education has asked universities and colleges to admit First Years without asking them to pay fees as the financing requests are processed.
One KMTC applicant stated: “Hello KUCCPS, we are having a problem submitting…see the screenshot…When I submit, it takes me to a blank screen.”
But the placement agency has promised to address the technical issues and post updates for a smoother application.
The initial application window for KMTC placement closed on August 4, 2023 after the popular medical training was finally included in the KUCCPS portal after years of resistance.
Eligibility for KMTC placement this year was open to individuals who had completed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination between 2013 and 2022. Other courses have been open to KCSE graduates since 2000, offering a wider net for young people interested in furthering education.
KMTC has witnessed a remarkable growth over the years, with the number of graduates increasing from 6,394 in 2013 to 15,915 in 2022. Additionally, the number of KMTC campuses has expanded from 28 in 2013 to 74 this year. It is expected that through the central placement agency more hopefuls would land their preferred courses in the medical field.
By last October, the Kenya National Qualifications Authority elevated the college’s Higher National Diploma programme to the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree.
