MKU signs apprenticeship, hospital jobs deal with German university

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has partnered with a German university for training and apprenticeship deal through which its students will secure jobs in Europe.

MKU is partnering with Hochschule Koblenz University in the deal that will see Kenyans work outside the country as healthcare assistants.

MKU Vice Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi said the students “will be provided with career opportunities in German hospitals. The university is also offering German language levels A1, A2, B1 and B2.”

The Certificate in Health Care Assistant for Germany Hospitals will be implemented through an MKU affiliate, Equip Institute and release students to Germany for apprenticeship and placement.

Offered at the Thika town and Mombasa campuses, the two-semester course starts in January 2023 while apprenticeship will begin in September.

Eligibility is a C+ and above grade in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and proficiency in German language. Those with grades below C+ will be considered based on German language proficiency.

“Students will enjoy the benefits of getting a student visa and salary and will be provided with excellent job opportunities for full-time employment after completing their training,” the VC added.

“Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, students will be offered career opportunities for full-time employment in German hospitals, exposing them to extensive further specialised training opportunities, among other benefits.”

MKU is among the universities in Kenya offering German language classes.

The partnership was reached after a groundwork by a consortium established in February 2022 to solve healthcare challenges while creating opportunities for healthcare workers in Africa.

The research consortium comprised Hochschule Koblenz as project lead, AG Career Hub and African Nurses/Pfleger in Germany.

Germany will have a deficit of between 400,000 and 600,000 vacancies by 2030 due to the ageing population.
