Registration for national examinations KCPE and KCSE exams to be administered by end of the year will run for two months beginning February 1.
Ending on March 30, the government says only school-going learners will benefit from its registration cash, presenting a big test for headteachers who struggle learners’ truancy.
Candidates re-sitting the papers and prisoners trying their luck from behind bars will also have to pay for own listing, just like the private candidates.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), through a circular, told heads of primary and secondary schools that ghost candidates are an examination malpractice.
The Ministry of Education will incur the registration cost for all candidates in public and private schools, continuing with the programme that has been running for years.
Those sitting for regular KCPE will pay Sh800, while KCSE candidates who register for seven subjects pay Sh5,000, Sh5,400 for eight subjects and 5,800 for nine.
KCSE resit attracts Sh5,500 for seven subjects, Sh5,900 for eight and while those on nine subjects pay Sh6,300.
Schools with less than five candidates will not be allowed to register candidates as independent examination centres.
Those with less than 30 candidates will be hosted in neighbouring examination centres in line with the KNEC guidelines.
School heads will be required to submit physical registration documents to KNEC offices on April 3 for verification before submission.
KCPE exam begins on November 6 to November 9, while KCSE will start on November 10 to December 1.
