Sub-county schools shine as national academies rule A-Plain table

Education CS challenges graduates to solve problems

As expected, national schools got the highest number of As in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations as sub-county institutions also managed seven out of the 1,216 top scores registered in the test whose results were released today.

This was slightly higher than the 1,146 recorded in 2022.

However, while the national schools led the pack with 889 scoring A Plain, they also registered 20 candidates with D- (minus) and below.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu while releasing the results said 825– representing 68 percent– of the candidates who scored a mean grade of A Plain were males while girls were 391.

This number of As represents 0.14 percent of the 899,453 total number of candidates that sat for the Form Four examination.

In the results, the number of candidates scoring the C+ minimum university grade rose to 201,133 against 173,345 in 2022, revealing a possible fiercer fight for the university courses than previously.

Extra-county schools managed 172 As while private schools had 143; county schools (5) and sub-county category secured seven.

“Overall, I am impressed by the grades that are coming out of our sub-county schools that produced 283 candidates with mean grades of A and A- in the 2023 KcSE examination,” Mr Machogu said.

In the grades distribution, 2,782 females and 4,472 males attained A- (minus) while a total 18,078 got B+; 36,728 had B plain (plain) while 59,514 got B- (minus) while C+ were 78,343.

The CS said he was “pained” to record that 44,174 scored E even under the revised ranking criterion of only two mandatory subjects.

“As the Cabinet Secretary, I am pained by the fact that a large number of candidates (44,174 or 5.33%) still ended up scoring a mean grade of E,” he said at Moi Girls Eldoret while releasing the results.   Of the Es, 19,960 were females while 28,214 were males.

Among the lower grades, 79,432 males and 86,429 females scored D- (minus), with 79,612 females achieving a D compared to 75,664 males; D+ has 66,032 females and 58,974 males.
