The government has advertised 4,000 internship positions in the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development.
In a July 22 notice, the Public Service Commission (PSC) has invited degree and diploma holders to apply for the internships covering 41 professional disciplines. Other requirements are basic computer skills and the applicant must have graduated from 2018.
The programme is part of the government’s push to support the Affordable Housing Programme and empower young professionals with practical skills in the race to create the much-needed jobs. Applications run until September 30 through the PSC websites: www.publicservice.go.ke or www.psckjobs.go.ke.
Kenyan workers contribute 1.5 percent of their gross salaries to support the Affordable Housing plan. Introduced by the Kenyan Kwanza government that took office in 2022, the plan’s implementation has been bumpy, partly with many court cases and opposing voices on social media.
Some of the key areas where interns are needed are architecture, construction management, and health and safety.
There are also several opportunities in civil, electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering, as well as quantity surveying and real estate. Other professional fields such as urban and regional planning, environmental studies, communication and branding, social development, valuation, and landscape architecture also feature prominently in the call.
The PSC further announced opportunities for economics, law, digital marketing, data entry, property management, actuarial science professionals. There are also a few chances for data analysis, artificial intelligence, and ICT.
Successful applicants will contribute to the Affordable Housing Programme, participate in mentorship and outreach activities, and promote project sites across the country. Each intern will receive a stipend and a certificate from the State Department for Housing and Urban Development upon completion.
