How a timeless cover letter gets you shortlisted, hired

Timeless letter

As an HR professional, I’ve reviewed thousands of job applications and realised that the biggest differences between candidates who land interviews and those who don’t lies in the cover letter. You need a timeless cover letter.

In today’s competitive job market, a well-written, evergreen cover letter can make a lasting impression. Globally, unemployment continues to be a critical concern. According to the International Labour Organization, the global unemployment rate is projected to rise slightly to 5.2 percent in 2025, up from 5.1 percent in 2024. In Kenya, the unemployment rate among youth remains persistently high—hovering around 13.4 percent, with many highly educated individuals struggling to secure decent employment.

In such a saturated environment, job seekers can no longer afford to be average. That’s where a timeless cover letter comes in.

What defines it?

A timeless cover letter is not one you copy-paste for every job application. Rather, it’s a well-structured, adaptable template that speaks to your core strengths, values, and motivation—something that stays relevant across industries and over time, yet can be quickly tailored to suit specific job requirements.

It’s a strategic asset. A timeless cover letter focuses not just on what you’ve done, but how your experiences align with an organisation’s mission and goals.

Why it matters

  1. First impressions count: Many recruiters form an opinion about a candidate within the first 30 seconds of reading their application. A timeless letter that highlights your authenticity and value proposition immediately sets you apart.
  2. Consistency across roles: You need a foundational narrative that holds together. A timeless letter ensures that your story remains cohesive, regardless of the specific job.
  3. Saves time, increases efficiency: While each job application deserves customisation, a great letter allows you to save precious hours. Instead of rewriting from scratch, you can tweak the details while keeping your compelling narrative intact.
  4. Shows strategic thinking: Employers are increasingly looking for candidates who think long-term, adapt easily, and communicate clearly. A timeless letter reveals your strengths and career direction.
  5. Stands out in a digital pile: According to a report by Glassdoor, the average corporate job opening attracts 250 applications. Of those, only four to six candidates are shortlisted. With a timeless letter, you increase your odds of moving from the “no” pile to the interview shortlist.

I’ve seen candidates with great credentials lose out simply because their cover letters lacked soul, coherence, or personality. I’ve also seen underqualified applicants get interviews because their cover letters sparked curiosity.

Your cover letter isn’t just an introduction—it’s your pitch, your mirror, your first handshake. And in an era where employers are looking beyond grades and CVs, it might just be your most powerful tool.
