Teachers are headed for a career-fulfilling end of year after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced about 45,000 teaching jobs.

Of the positions, 21,313 vacancies are for senior teachers while 24,000 are for interns who will be posted to the junior secondary schools.

In a public notice on Tuesday, August 12 acting TSC CEO Eveleen Mitei listed the senior roles for chief principal, senior principal, principal, deputy principal, senior lecturer, and senior master. Others are secondary teacher I, senior head-teacher, head-teacher, deputy head-teacher, senior teacher, senior curriculum support officer, and curriculum support officer.

Candidates will apply through the TSC portal— www.teachersonline.go.ke— not later than August 25. Manual applications will not be accepted.

“Successful candidates shall be posted to schools where vacancies are available,” the notice stated.

The intern teachers who will be posted to the junior schools apply from August 26 until September 9 through www.tsc.go.ke or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has criticised the commission for failing to promote teachers who have remained in the same job group for more than a decade.

Kuppet secretary-general Akello Misori said the TSC should follow the example of the National Police Service (NPS), which recently announced automatic promotions for police officers stuck in one job group for over 10 years.

“We commend the National Police Service for announcing promotions without the declaration of vacancies or interviews. TSC should do the same for long-serving teachers who are already qualified for higher positions,” Misori said.

The union’s deputy secretary-general Moses Nthurima added that the stagnation in teacher promotions was discriminatory and showed the commission’s reluctance to address educators’ concerns.

“When a government singles out one sector for automatic promotions, what about teachers? It is good that police officers have been promoted, but teachers who have been in the same job group for more than a decade deserve the same recognition,” he said.
