Simply the best: Tina Turner goes past formal education hurdles to lead.

Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock, on November 26, 1939, has rested. She was 83 at the time of her death on May 24.

From her excellence, the American-born Swiss singer, songwriter, actress, and author whose net worth is estimated at $250 million (Sh34 billion) at time of death, the icon is leaving the world with huge lessons.

Her energy, resilience, innovativeness, courage, talent and commitment stand out.

She is best known for her vocals, energetic stage presence, and many hit songs as a rock and roll musician whose career spanned more than six decades.

In a field where the beautiful ones are born every day, doing six decades reveals a rare resilience but one that shows Tina did well in nurturing her passion and talent identified at a young age in Nutbush, Tennessee, a small rural town.

Her childhood was marked by hiccups, including her parents’ separation and her mother’s abandonment, but these never stood in her way to the top.

Growing up, she attended the Flagg Grove School, a segregated school for African American children. At 16, she dropped out of high school.

In her teenage, she joined a local church choir and began singing in local clubs.

Throughout her career, Tina faced personal and professional challenges but soared as a solo artist with hits such as What’s Love Got to Do with It and Private Dancer.

Despite Tina’s limited formal education, her talent, hard work, and perseverance led her to become one of the most respected artists.

She married fellow musician Ike who recognised her talent before inviting her to join his band, the Kings of Rhythm. As the lead vocalist, together they recorded the hit single A Fool in Love in 1960, which launched Tina’s career.

They divorced in 1978, but Tina took the step to start her solo career, breaking through in 1984 with the release of her fifth solo album, Private Dancer.

Tina turned her hoarse voice into a trademark when combined with a gripping stage presence and performance.

Her high-energy dance steps and incredible vocal range made Tina’s performances must-attend events.

Apart from music career, Tina was in acting and starred in the film Tommy (1975) and had important roles in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) alongside Mel Gibson and Last Action Hero (1993) with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In the 1990s, Tina released her autobiography, I, Tina, which detailed her tumultuous relationship with Ike.

She sold more than 200 million records worldwide.

“Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like,” actress Angela Bassett said.

Tina retired from performing in 2009, but left the world with the message of resilience in her performance life. She showed the world that amid turmoil and challenges, one can create a life they believe in.

Tina proved that there is no expiry date on talent.
