How to live productively while waiting for KCSE results

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations are ending this week after a month of hard work, tension and expectations. But as that season ends, it is another period of nail-biting, anxiety and prayers before the results are released later in December.

How should the Form Four leavers live a productive life before the exam results are announced to usher them into a new era of higher learning and next course of action?  It’s crucial to approach this time with a positive mindset, focusing on personal growth in their next chapter of life.

Waiting is a natural part of life for everyone. It is important to be patient and accept that the results will come at the appointed time. Those waiting ought to be resilient, withstanding any uncertainties that will obviously hit parents and the candidates.

While stress may assail you as you interact with people who sat for the examination and listen to their endless post-mortem of the tests, try meditation, deep breathing, or yoga that can help calm the mind and maintain a healthy emotional balance.

One can also discover or rekindle passions, including writing, painting, playing a musical instrument, or doing sports for a constructive engagement and prudent use of youthful energy.

Giving back to the community is not only fulfilling but also an excellent way to develop valuable skills. Therefore, consider volunteering or initiating community projects that will be enriching but also form the first pages of your resume. Organisations are becoming keener on community engagement footprint and technical abilities in equal measure since these strengths will get noticed locally, regionally and internationally.

What about learning new skills? It could be decided by your interest, but trends lean towards coding, graphic design, foreign language, or any skill relevant to your aspirations. Acquiring new knowledge and skill or sharpening talent expands your horizons and makes the waiting period and the future more productive.

It is also important to reflect on interests and career goals through research, interactions with peers and professionals in the fields that turn one on and attend career fairs or workshops. Having a clearer vision can alleviate anxiety about the unknown.

Surround yourself with positive and supportive individuals such as friends, family, and mentors. Connecting with others who understand your journey can provide comfort and encouragement.

Apart from everything else, remember to be physically fit since exercising is a tried and tested stress reliever. Go jogging, cycling, or walking just like the Deputy President of Kenya Rigathi Gachagua has perfected the routine at home and away. Physical activity improves well-being and moods.

Which colleges and universities do you want to join? This is the time to search and research such that when the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service asks people to apply for degree and TVET programmes, the process will be a lot easier if not flawless. In related searches, look for scholarship opportunities and vocational training programmes that would place you ahead of the pack of a million-plus candidates .

Lastly, give priority to self-care by getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, interacting with the right people to form birds of a feather and taking care of your physical and mental well-being.

All the best.
