Kenya Medical Training College KMTC has opened applications for the March 2024 intake.

Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni on Wednesday said the window is open for certificate, Diploma, and Upgrading and Higher Diploma programmes.

The announcement comes as KUCCPS extended the course application to March 4 due to the hiccups that threaten to lock thousands from university and polytechnic courses.

KMTC courses are also accessible through KUCCPS, but the successful applicants through the placement agency are expected to join the training institutions later in the year. KUCCPS placement is expected to be completed in the next few months.

“Application for KMTC Upgrading, Higher Diploma, and Short Courses will remain open until the required number of applicants is achieved on a course-by-course basis,” Ms Muthoni said.

The KMTC reporting date is March 12.

Nearly 600 nurses leave the country annually to seek greener pastures in foreign countries.

The Nursing Council of Kenya says a majority of the nurses leaving the country are aged between 21-35.

Most of those who have undergone specialised training in renal and ICU care mostly migrate to Canada, Australia, and the US.

Within the continent, a majority of the nurses prefer working in Botswana and South Africa.

The council says the majority of nurses employed in Kenya age between 40 and 55.

Since the inception of the council in 1946, 81,114 nurses have been registered, however, only 49,900 are in active service.

President William Ruto has been vocal in advocating for foreign jobs.
