Soldiers airlift 25 teachers to Boni Forest

Learners at Boni Forest can finally breathe easily after the government airlifted some of their teachers one week since schools reopened.

A team drawn from various agencies led by the Kenya Defence Forces on Monday moved 25 teachers to schools within the terror-prone area in Lamu County.

This comes after Major General Officer Commanding Eastern Command, Juma Mwinyikai, and other Operation Amani Boni (OAB) officials toured the area and proposed working with education officers and other stakeholders who agreed on such airlift urgently.

Schools such as Mangai, Mararani, Milimani, Basuba, and Kiangwe faced a bleak future when a week after reopening on January 23 the teachers failed to resume due to transport woes.

Lamu Education Director Joshua Kaaga said the effort would see more than 400 learners in the area continue learning at a time Grade Seven students were reporting for Junior Secondary classes.

The County Teachers Service Commission boss, Riziki Daido, said another 30 teachers would be deployed to the area in the just-ended teacher recruitment.

Charles Kitheka, the deputy county commissioner, assured teachers of security.
