Angela Okutoyi wins African Games tennis title

Kenyan tennis sensation Angela Okutoyi clinched the African Games title in Ghana on Thursday, becoming the first Kenyan to claim gold in the category since 1978.

Facing off against Egyptian Abdelaziz Lamiz, the 2022 Wimbledon Doubles junior champion dominated the match from the outset. She surged to a 6-4, 6-2 triumph, securing her spot in Kenyan sports history.

Her path to the title was paved with grit and perseverance, as evidenced by her epic semifinal clash against 70th-ranked Mayar Sheriff of Egypt, winning 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 in a thrilling encounter.

Okutoyi expressed gratitude to her supporters and well-wishers who stood by her throughout her journey.

“First I wanna thank GOD for getting me this far [hambling emoji] Second wanna thank my team, my federation, NOCK, my school, people back home and everyone who l haven’t mentioned, and my fans. This just means so much to me a childhood dream coming to light participating at the @olympics. Hope this gives someone watching a believe that anything is possible,” she stated.

Okutoyi aims to break into the top 400 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings by June 10, building on her ranking at 532.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula praised her for defying the odds and representing Kenya with distinction on the global stage.

“Congratulations to Ms Angella Okutoyi for her outstanding achievement in winning the Tennis Gold Medal and defying the odds at the African Games in Ghana,” he wrote.

The athlete has contributed to Kenya’s Billie Jean King Cup team with an impressive win/loss record of 11–5.
