More than 11,600 Form Four graduates have been admitted to teacher training colleges through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

Out of the total, 10,800 have been placed to Diploma in Primary Teacher Education programme while 836 will pursue Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced on Tuesday.

The combined capacity for both programmes stood at 13,823.

The increase in applications is partly linked to recent changes introduced through the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, which revised the minimum entry qualifications for joining the teacher training colleges. Kenya has 33 public primary teacher training colleges.

“This marks a milestone in expanding teacher education and strengthening the foundation of basic education,” said Ogamba.

The teacher placements are part of the broader KUCCPS placement, where 310,502 applicants secured admission to various universities and colleges across the country. Among them, 25,034 got Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) programmes, including 6,750 who attained the university entry grades.

The KUCCPS placed 194,372 candidates who scored C+ and above in the 2024 KCSE exams to various academic programmes.

In line with the reforms, the government has launched new teacher training colleges in Northern Kenya, a step that is expected to raise access and regional spread in teacher training.

As the September intake draws closer, the CS asked more qualified people to grab opportunities in teacher, technical, and health training.
