Michael Mutiga has been confirmed as the new chief executive of Stanbic Bank Kenya following the Central Bank of Kenya approval.
His new role is the latest climb in a career covering more than 20 years across telecoms, banking, and digital financial services.
Mr Mutiga, who left telecoms giant Safaricom in July as strategy executive, brings extensive experience in strategy, business growth and organisational turnaround, firmed up by his experience in senior leadership roles across East Africa, working with top companies.
Stanbic says it is looking forward to tapping this mercuarial experience as the bank continues to build long-term value for its various stakeholders in the competitive Kenyan banking landscape.
“We look forward to his leadership as we continue creating long-term value for our clients, people and stakeholders,” Stanbic announced.
Stanbic chairman Joe Muganda, who also heads the board of Nation Media Group, singled out Mr Mutiga’s “unique experience” saying the bank was “confident” the CEO will steer the lender into a sustainable future.

Mr Mutiga said he was “honoured and excited” to assume the leadership of such “a formidable institution.”
At Safaricom, he built on his experience in financial services and corporate leadership.
Before joining the telco, Mr Mutiga took 15 years at Citibank, where he held top local and regional positions.
He climbed the leadership ladder to become MD and head of corporate finance for Sub-Sahara, based in South Africa.
As a banker, he also had a stint at Barclays (now Absa in the region), where he was coverage head for investment banking in East Africa.
Mr Mutiga studied for a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Nairobi and later pursued a Master of Laws at Temple University in the US.
He holds a diploma in IT from Strathmore University, one of the leading trainers in business in East Africa.
