Nyaigotti-Chacha replaces Anangwe as University of Nairobi council boss

The government has reorgainsed various university councils in appointments that are expected to change how the institutions are led at a time they are struggling with resource constraints and huge student enrolment.

Among the changes Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba announced is the appointment of Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha to chair the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council, replacing Amukowa Anangwe.

In a July 25, 2025 gazette notice Ogamba named the following as members of the UoN Council: John Kakonge, Samuel Njuguna Kimani, Jonathan Lodompui, and Mary Amuyunzu.

At Kenyatta University, Joash Keraita and Isaac Opuya Litali were appointed as Council members while Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Bashir Yusuf and Alice Waruguru Muita were re-appointed for three-year term.

James K. Sang will chair the Egerton University Council while Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed and Amos Okello were picked as new members.

Josephat Kipsoy Sawe was reappointed as a member at Kisii University while new members are Pamela Awuor Ochieng, Peter Mageto, and Mwenda Makathimo, a well-known land expert.

Peter Kereri, Evelyne Legis, and Razoah Vitisia got roles at the University of Eldoret while P. M. Kutima will chair the University of Embu as Christine Guchu joins as a member.

Kirinyaga University’s new members are Silas Jakakimba, Ibrahim Khamis Mutwafy, Ursula Sabina Oyatsi, and Margaret Kathambi Gitonga while Murang’a University got Allan Mugambi Michael, Amran Mohamed Ali, Getrude Kurgat, and Abdul Ramadhan Odhiambo.

Garissa University got John Karani Ndiwa, Jonah N. Kariuki, and Dr. Alice Otwala as new members while Hassan Sheikh Mohamed was reappointed.

Lizzie Chongoti, Joyce Nyabuti, Gilbert Nyongesa, Thomas Leremore, and Davies Mukuria are joining the Mama Ngina University College at a time Nyandarua University College got Kirkwony Sophy, Fatuma Abdi, Job Chelongo, Julius Mokogi, and Kariuki Peter Maru to its top management organ.

John O. Shiundu was appointed as the chair of the Council of Bomet University College where he will work with Emily Nyagaram, Rose Chepkorir, Fredrick Njoroge, and Reuben C. Butaki as members.

Josephat Yego is the new chair of Koitaleel Samoei University College where Elizabeth Mjomba and Raphael Kapiyo are joining as members.

Mercy Njagi was appointed as a council member of the troubled Moi University while Eliazer Kogey will go to Laikipia University in similar capacity. Willy Kioko Malile is joining Rongo University.

Idle Farah was re-appointed as the chair of the Technical University of Kenya Council that John Nyambok joins as a member.

David Osero and Edward Kobuthi have been sent to Karatina University alongside David Opiyo while David Koech heads to South Eastern Kenya University.

At Taita Taveta University, Isaac Mbeche, a former college principal at UoN, will be the chair while Emma Kibiru and Stephen Kilungya are joining the institution as members of the apex organ.

Closing the long list of Council appointments is Anthony Saiti and Mary Simat who are joining the Co-operative University of Kenya.

Away from the universities, the Education CS reappointed Cyrus Gituai as the chair of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service for a three-year term.
